Ensemble Ndeye Soxna (ENdS) is Arizona’s only performing ensemble specializing in Sabar drumming. We are dedicated to bringing the traditional drums and rhythms of Senegal to audiences across the state. ENdS members are former students of the late percussionist, ethnomusicologist and Arizona State University Professor of Music, Dr. Mark E. Sunkett, whose “Drums of Senegal” research project was focused mainly on Sabar drumming. The original five members of ENdS were brought together in 2014 by Dr. Sonja D. Branch, a longtime student and colleague of Dr. Sunkett, with the goal of carrying forward his musical legacy. A group of multi-talented professionals, they share their passion for Sabar through concerts, lectures, collaboration, and education. Their energetic stage presence earned them an inviation to perform in the 2015 NFL Pro Bowl halftime show. Ensemble Ndeye Soxna is intent on keeping Sabar alive in the desert!
